It asks for the code once, stores it, and registers itself to start with the machine. Copy the code from your dashboard; it is public and safe to paste anywhere.
Close the lid, walk away
It runs while the machine is on and stops when it is off. meerkly status tells you how it is doing; the dashboard shows what it has earned.

The exit refuses anything that is not a routable public address — no localhost, no 192.168.*, no router admin page — so nothing reaches inside your home.
Bytes are counted as they move, by us, not reported by your device. That is why the number you see is the number you are paid.
